YEAR 8 REWARD TRIP TO CORAL REEF

Dear Parents / Guardians

We are pleased to inform you that a high proportion of Year 8 pupils have done themselves proud so far this year, regarding attendance, punctuality, hard work, and good behaviour. We would like to acknowledge this by organising a Reward Trip to Coal Reef on Saturday 23 June 2007.

The coach will be leaving from the top of the Lady Margaret Road, by the school’s side entrance at 8.30 am. promptly. Pupils should get on the coach between 8.15 am. and 8.20 am. We shall arrive back at school at 6.15 pm. Please indicate on the attached form if you are happy for your child to make their own way home, or if you intend to pick them up. At the end of the trip the coach will be dropping off pupils by the school’s side entrance on Lady Margaret Road.

Pupils are requested to bring a mobile phone with them, plus any necessary medication. Students will also need extra spending money for drinks, and will need to provide their own lunch. They may take a packed lunch, or buy food at the many food outlets. However an addition of £1 may be needed for the usage of lockers at Coral Reef( pupils between 2 may share if they like)

Students will not be directly supervised while at Coral Reef. However, there will be an emergency contact point staffed at all times throughout the day. In the unlikely event that your child encounters a problem he or she may either visit staff at this point, or ring us on the school trip mobile: 07947253946. Alternatively, pupils can approach a member of Thorpe Park staff.

There will be a meeting for all pupils going on this trip, on Wednesday 20 June 2007, in Room A17, after school, at 2.45 pm. until 3.05 pm.

We must stress that staff have given up their free time to organise this trip to reward the many students who have worked hard and behaved excellently, and have a good attendance record. We reserve the right to only take those pupils who have met these criteria, and continue to do so.

If you feel that your son or daughter deserves a place on this Trip, and if you are willing to accept the terms laid out in this letter, please fill in the attached form and return it together with a cheque made out to ‘Greenford High School’ for £24. (Apologies, we do not accept cash or postal order payments). This sum covers the entrance to Coral Reef, transport by coach and full personal insurance cover. Please write your child’s name and Form on the back of the cheque.

Your payment and application form should be handed in to Mrs Octave in Room H06, behind the English block, from Tuesday 12 June onwards, at morning registration only.

Yours sincerely

David Clare

final beat review

Final beat is an explosive trailer about a young Asian protagonist, who tries to make it in the music industry, but will he break free from the urban jungle or will corrupted gangs and gun violence drag him back down. The Final beat trailer contains various enigmas used to suture and almost captivate the audience into the narrative and allows the audience to create an identification with the problems and issues confronted by the many the main hero, as described in proppain terms.

The cinematography is very creative in the film trailer, and shots of the urban city is juxtaposed with shots of natural and open shots to create a sense that the main protagonist is trying to break free from the endless circle of gang crime and corruption. The use of low key lighting conveys a more darker and sinister feeling, whilst in contrast, sped up shots in the car create a blurred affect and the colours created are almost used to create a certain feeling.

The use of original music allows the trailer to be fresh and original as it contain elements of grim, which allows a young urban audience to identify with the trailer. The trailer contains elements of MTV aesthetics in the way it is edited, as shots are cut and regular intervals long with the beats of the music. However, this constant pattern is disrupted as the montage sequence is introduced, and leaves the audience in a state of shock to make the visual representations on the montage even more effective.

The last montage sequence is used to build to the climax, using a non-linear approach; the narrative structure is disrupted suturing the audience. The montage sequence is done backwards to create a sense that the main protagonist can see his life flashes before his eyes, the audience also learns to relate to the main hero as point of view shots are used.

Practical Production Evaluation – 'Final Beat'

For my practical production i worked in a group of three including myself. I worked with Juggy and Sundeep and produced a film trailer for a film called 'Final Beat'. Our main aim was to make the trailer look as devastation as possible by using shots that attract and pull in the audience to produce tension. We chose to use the title 'Final Beat' as it was prior to our practical production as it refers to the final beat the individual produced, the beat which is related to the police boundary and the last beat spoken from the heart, these will be obstacles or problem the character will come across, we have some a glimpse of the obstacles within our trailer. Through out our whole production, we have used the phrase 'beat' to connote more than one meaning, this will help entice our audience to feel the tension throughout the trailer, which will provoke our target audience to watch the actual film.

When we began to breach the planning stage for our practical production, we decided to spread each role evenly through the group in order for us to gain experience in each section, as we all have strengths and weaknesses, and working evenly spread can help us correct each other or combine all our strengths and ideas to conclude with the ultimate strength to include to our production, all three of us would be then satisfied with the choice. However, we then realized that it was based on who ever was available, but we still shared equal input. We still had responsibilities, of which some where the same, my major responsibility was to produce the soundtrack in time for us to use, I decided to make this whilst we were editing. In editing we all took part by sharing ideas and giving equal satisfaction about the sequence chosen. Each of us had different experiences in editing style for example, Sundeep had experience in a film trailer, myself and Juggy had experience in producing a music video. The editing conventions of a film trailer is fast pacing, which is similar to a music video.

The opening of our film trailer is a sequence which is put their to produce tension towards the audience, and leave enigma that the audience find left unanswered. This sequence gives away the genre of the film, by the use of sound affects such as the gun shot, and the police sirens. The most effective sound effect is the heart beat which gradually increases in speed, this equips and prepares the audience for the enigmatic sequence. The purpose of this sequence is a flashback, which the audience must focus on, as the out come is at the beginning rather than the end. This is a unique technique as we conclude with end end a the beginning rather than the end. We used Todorov's theory but we rearranged the sequence to show the disequilibrium in the opening of the film trailer.

Towards the end of the film trailer we included a fast montage sequence, to show a typical film trailer convention. The fast montage sequence is used wisely in a specific time where the soundtrack suit the type of moving image, the soundtrack give it more of the tragedy as the music is parallel to the sequence. The typical convention normally used within a film trailer is a voice over, but we decided not to use a voice over, as we had decided to make the film trailer seem more authentic and make it more of a art house film. We only focused on using the soundtracks which is non-diegetic and diegetic sound such as the police sirens and the actual sound of some of the sequences. We chose to use the diegetic sound of the sequence as the words used mean something and is useful information to develop a storyline within the audience's mind.

After studying 'Bowling for Columbine in Module 2' I was inspired by the anti gun society who believe that guns kill. This gave the team an idea about using gun violence within our film trailer. Bowling For Columbine was based in the USA, we wanted to produce a tragic like bowling for columbine, but we focused to do this in the UK in a form of a film trailer. We focused more on the best shots to produce the gun killing, this is why we chose to put the sequence of the dead body at the start, as we want the enigmas to relate on how the individual got there in this position and what had done it? We show the prop of the gun right at the end of a still image of one of the characters holding the gun, so the audience focus on the prop of the gun and think it is not only to protect but also kill. We didn't only focus on the prop of the gun but also the the microphone. This prop is important as this is the whole reason on why this disequilibrium was the outcome. We hoping to show that the new equilibrium can be formed by the imagination of the audience, as we don't want them to live a life nest to a gun.

We do this by focusing the whole trailer on our primary audience. The primary audience is revealed by the characteristics of the each character within the film, the characters aim at the same age group of around 16+ but the whole primary age group is 12-21. the socio-economics group would be C1 C2 as we want to attract most of the audience as possible. These issues of fighting, passion of music etc are likely to run through the childhood of these type workers. By studying 'Bullet Boy' in module 2 we decided to follow the education purpose of the whole film, we wanted to sponsor our film by BBC to also educate about the outcome of gun crime.
The education purpose would help us produce our narrative as we want the new equilibrium to be formed by the audience themselves from watching the film trailer.

To conclude with the overall production, 'Final Beat' it shown as a art-house film in a purpose to educate. The entertainment throughout the film is the key to entice the audience to watch the film. We seem to show the typical stereotype youth within th year 2000 and hope to send a message across of the mistake made within the trailer.

Sundeep Kahlon - "Final Beat" evaluation

“Final Beat” is a practical production trailer, which explores the art house and gangster genre to create similar themes to “Bullet Boy” (2004) and “City of God” (2002). The genre of he trailer is a hybrid of gangster and art house because we really wanted to challenge the mainstream gangster genre and appeal to a wider audience.

I feel that every one put equal effort into the trailer and that we worked well as a team. At first we started to come up with ideas and a narrative that we all agreed into following, and then created a story board but we all agreed that the storyboard was not final and that things would change.

As our main influence on the trailer, we wanted to link our trailer to “Bullet Boy” (2004) as we felt that we knew most about this movie (having studied it for Module 2) and that the genre and themes raised were similar, also because it is a British movie and it would best reflect our society. We also tried to link our trailer to other movies that would be similar to the genre that we were exploring; “8 Mile” (2002) and “Menace to Society” (1993), for example. We used “BBC Films” as our institution, because they are institution that educated, informs and entertains, showing that this movie has a message to be put across to its audience.

In our trailer, we tried to follow a more anti-narrative structure, which is a typical convention of a trailer overall. However, at the same time we tried to establish identification with the audience and the main characters as well as create a short narrative, to give the audience an idea of what the main themes are. We tried to incorporate Todorov’s narrative theory, equilibrium, dis-equilibrium and new equilibrium to create a story line. However, this is not the case because there is a cliffhanger at the end, which means that the audience do not get to see if the movie will have a new equilibrium. We also tried to create enigmas within the trailer, as Barthe suggested through his enigma code theory; the enigmas create suspense and anxiety through out the trailer, and because the trailer leaves the audience in a cliffhanger at the end, may mean that the audience would be more likely to watch the film; to find out what happens.

The cinematography is very creative in the trailer, I feel that the cinematography is very professional and reinforces the trailers art house themes. We tried to use various shots, as well as playing with a lot of the lighting, to create a certain atmosphere. For example, we used a lot of low-key lighting at various points to create a sinister and ominous feeling, e.g. when a gangster, who fails to receive his loan from the main character, confronts the protagonist. We wanted to really capture the villain’s unstable mind through the lighting. In this scene there is only back lightning and most of his body is in darkness creating a menacing personality for this character and defining his role in the movie; villain as described by Propp.

Perhaps one of the most appealing features of our trailer to our audience would be the soundtracks that we have used. We used a mixture of two songs; one by Eminem and another produced by Raj, a fellow group member. We really wanted the music to reflect the moods and atmosphere of the visual images and representations in the trailer, but at the same time appeal to a teenage “Urbanite” audience, which would be similar to the audiences, that “Bullet Boy” (2004) appeals to. To appeal to the audience, the sound track that Raj had produced had a more “Grimy” feel to it, and the “beat boxing” in the instrumental really captured an urban feel to the trailer, this also allows the audience to relate to the trailer. We also used both non-diegetic and diegetic sound to make the trailer seem more authentic, we also used some dialogue to drive the hero and villain narrative; the binary opposition between the main hero and villain as described by Levis Strauss.

One weakness of our trailer is that the opening shots of the dead body last far too long. Also, some of the speech is unclear because there seems to be a lot of interference with the wind blowing, making it unprofessional, this fault can be heard in the ending scenes when the villain confronts the hero.

However I think that our trailer has many strengths, for example we used a lot of open field and natural shots to create a sense that the main protagonist is trying to break free from the “Urban jungle”, which is demonstrated in the opening shot. However, we didn’t include a lot of these shots in the final edited version because we feel that it doesn’t create an effective identification with our primary audience. We also tried to be creative in the shots that we used to create a more art house feel and to appeal to our secondary audience. For example, there are lots of shots of the inside of the car travelling, which are sped up creating an almost dream like artistic look, but also showing that the main protagonist is getting closer to the end of his journey.

We also tried to appeal to our audience through the quotes that were shown, we used a broadsheet newspaper; “The Guardian” to appeal to our secondary audience who would be a more sophisticated audience, belonging to B and A socio economic groups. We used “HIP.HOP CONNECTION” to appeal to our primary audience.

Finally, I feel that the representation of ethnic minorities is also greatly explored to create an effective identification between the audience and the characters to create “emotional engagement” especially because the audience can relate to some of the life problems faced by the main protagonist; it also reflects issues in our society, e.g. gun crime. Also the fact that there is a lot of ethnic minority in this film trailer, it sends a more positive ideology to the audience and that Britain is a more multicultural society, it also breaks typical stereotypes of many Asian people.
I think that “Final Beat” as a whole is very good and I feel that it fulfils the job of a trailer, persuade the audience into watching the movie and also create enigmas. It also contains many different shots and themes to rein force its art house qualities.

Final Progress report

Finally we’ve done all our editing!!! I think we’ve done a really goods job in getting the trailer done and I am really happy with the final product – its all done to the marking of the trailer and the rest of the coursework. I enjoyed editing the trailer, even though there were times when I thought we would get nothing done, but we ended up being one of the 1st people to finish the practical production. Any way really happy with final product and I hope every one enjoys the trailer!!!

progress report-------really good editing so far!

This week we got done a lot of editing!!! And it turned out to be really good! Especially the starting of the trailer, the sound affects go really well with the dead body scene. Hopefully we should get done most of our trailer done, so that we can get some good feed back from Mr Bush. But we all need to edit together, every one seems to be doing editing on their free periods, but never after school! The trailer has been getting good feed back from the media mentors so far, and they have been pretty help full.

i proudly present Final Beat....

we have made alot of progress in terms of editing in addition to more filming.

the Sunday which has just passed was a very dangerous Sunday as due to commitment i and fellow students had to brake minor laws in order to get some footage we wanted. seeing though as my team members wern't up to challenge it was up to me to do it, so i went on a high high high no access area with a torch at night to film:D

now i know what you humans are thinking it was perfectly legal(in my book) and the filming was completed. in terms of editing, we have made progress in it as we have got to the middle of the editing and are almost finished.

*i was going to go new york for 2days to film the city which would have been useful however due some circumstances i was enable to.

Ive only seen the blog now and have realised that i was too late to apply for the Windsor filming challenge, I'm f*****g p*****d off because of that, because i really wanted to do it but oh well shit happens right, however if there is still a chance i would like to know about it, thank you.

that's about it, and ill see you people next week.

take it eazy to all and god bless..........

Progress report

We have made quite a bit of progress when it come to our editing, but! We have no sound track. Raj should have made one by Thursday, which would mean that we can really start editing our trailer according to the beats in the song. This will make our trailer more authentic and realistic, as the trailer will cut at the same time as the beats. Also, when are we all going to edit together?
Sundeep Kahlon

sundeep - self evaluation

I feel that this term I have tried my best in terms of homework, contributions in class, working independently, etc. I feel that I should get a 1 for attainment, as I feel that I have submitted all my work in on time, and tried my best to be vocal in class more, which was one of my targets to improve on last term. I also put 100% in all of my homework and essay that I do, and I do them to the best of my ability.

In terms of effort, I feel that I have put a lot more effort in this term than last term; I always try to produce the best quality of homework, with better presentation than last term. Also, in class I listen attentively, and I’m always keen to learn more. I feel that I should receive a 2 for my effort.

I feel that I am very punctual because I always come on time in media lessons; this is because I enjoy media, and I also really enjoy the lessons it self. I always give a positive attitude towards media, and being punctual in lesson makes me feel that I have a positive attitude towards the subject. I also think that I have not yet been late to any media lessons this term and should get a 1 for it.

My submission of work has been around 90%, and I feel that I am really benefiting from the homework, as it allows me to develop my media skills, and better my understanding of the subject. I also said that I should improve my presentation in work, and I feel that it has been greatly improved; I feel that I should get a 2 for my homework. I think I work well as an individual, because I listen carefully in class and when I do my homework, I try to use and apply what I already learnt and what I learnt in class on that day. I try not to relay on others so much, because I feel that I should be mature and attempt things on my own, as an individual – I should get a 2 for this.

Also, my writing skills are always improving, and as every term goes by – my writing skills become of a higher standard. This is because I use new terminology that I learn in class and apply my understanding of it; I feel that I should receive 1 for my independent work. However, my media folder does seem to be outdated, and perhaps a little out of order, I will try my best to sort my folder out – 3 for my folder.

I feel that I have started to contribute a lot more in class than last term, and I am more vocal and confident in class, because I’ve got to know the people more, and because it was one of my target areas to improve in. however, I don’t feel that I contribute often enough and although I have started to be vocal, I still need to be more vocal. I would give my self-2 for this.

Still my, comment and contributions to the blog have not been sufficient enough, and I need to put up a lot more comments.

I feel that we have made a lot of progress in our group, and I feel that I have put a lot more effort and thought in the group than last year in year 11. Especially with the new blog, I have tried my best to keep things updated, and I would give my self a 2 for this part of my self-evaluation.

I feel that the standard of our blog is very high, because we have kept everything up to date, and all our research of the trailers we have studied is also posted up. I feel that our blog is up to date and so I’d give a 2 for our blog.

Targets to improve

1. Post more comments on the blog and write in a little more detail

2.Keep my folder up to date, and in a good order.

3.Try and make the best practical production that my group and I can make.

Progress report

We’ve done all our filming now – some very good footage again (Said this a million times), I guess its all down to editing now, which can make or break our production. We’ve done all of the capturing for our previous footage; already started to edit on that and have done about 30secs of our trailer. Hopefully, we should capture the rest of the footage and do another 30secs-1min of the trailer, which shouldn’t leave too much to do. Sorry couldn’t make it to editing on Monday – Randy’s made me sick I think.

I HAVE WRITTEN THIS PROGRESS REPORT 2 TIMES NOW AND ITS BEEN DELETED, I HAVE A VIRUS CALLED, TROJAN AND SPYDAWN, HOWEVER DUE TO HARD WORK AND BIG MUSCLES I THINK I HAVE FIXED IT.

HOWEVER A POSITIVE COME BACK IS THAT WE WERE FILMING OUR MURDER SCENE WHICH IS ONE OF THE MAIN SCENES, AND IT DIDNT COME OUT TO BAD AT ALL.

IT TOOK US A LONG TIME TO DO AS ITS AN IMPORTANT SCENE SO OTHER FILMING COULDNT BE COOMPLETED HOWEVER BY THIS WEEK ALL FILMING WILL BE DONE.
AS FAR AS THE EDITING SUITE GOES, I WENT THERE YDAY IN THE MORNING, HOWEVER THE INTERNET WASNT WORKING ON THE COMPUTERS WHICH MEANT I COULDNT GET SOME OF THE IMPORTANT CLIPS WHICH I NEEDED, HOWEVER I STILL MADE DO WITH WHAT I DID AND EXPERIMENTED WITH MANY DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF EDITING.

Yes Yes this iz amazing, we have finally complted the major scene of our practical production. we have complted the dead body scene. now that we have done our final and most prior scene we can now edit our asses off, but if we need to touch up any parts of the trailer we can using the camera, we will still be holding on to it just incase we might want to re-shoot it as the log sheet cannot be 100% accurate as we had done it on a 3inch screen.
We should be looking ahead to what we can do to actually improve our trailer as this is the only time we have. I have completed my Practical Production Brief, i didn't think i had to take anything out as we had stuck to our idea, i added some more information and changed some spelling errors and mistakes.

progress report

So far we’ve done even more filming, more specifically the dead body scene, which is one of the most important scenes in the trailer. This took longer than expected and so we couldn’t shoot some of the other scenes that we wanted to, but these should be done by this week. We haven’t really made a lot of progress when it comes to editing – on capturing and on Wednesday I’m thinking of doing some editing after school because I will have some free time…and then even more editing on Thursday…maybe even Friday!...the Lunar eclipse was very cool

We have only two scenes to complete. the most prior scene we must shoots is of the dead body, this will be the opening of the trailer and the ending, and the clip that will produce the enigma throughout the whole trailer, we have put all of our ideas to conclude to tis decision, we didn't manage to shoot this scene in the holidays as we havd o chance and didn;t have the props, now that we have the setting and the props, we are now ready to complete the scene.

Planing for sunday

Well…our filming should be coming to a close, as we have done a lot of our filming, some good footage as well. The only part that is left is the gang scene; this is one of the most important parts of the trailer as this is where the cliffhanger happens and also the climax of our trailer. Hope fully things should go to plan and we should get some more good shots. we are also planning to do a drive shooting, which i think might be very intresting as well.

PROGRESS REPORT: FILMED ON THE 10TH AND IS TO BE CONTINUED ON THE 18TH(PROGRESS REPORT AFTER THE 18TH IS BELOW THIS ONE SO BE CAREFUL WHEN READING)

for saturday we succeeded in our filming and actually got quite alot of footage, whilst filming we had many brainwaves and also had quite alot of unplanned footage, e.g.,we were walking down the high street and saw my refelection in a puddle and decided to include this in our footage as it is unique and clever. Also a car scene was produced, which we needed to do, and then took some different angles for that. Moreover, we spent the majority of the time on the morning scene which proved to be difficult that it was meant to be. however, we finished the day with good footage. for sunday i have spoken to some mates and sunday we will be filming the gang scene moreover i spoke to a friend who has a motorbike, so instead of a drive by shooting in a car, we can make it more realistic and unique by a motorcycle drive by. and also for sundays filming we should be going ostley park to film there.JaGi:

Progress report

We’ve got a lot of filming done over Sunday, and got some of the best footage we captured so far. Some particular footage that I thought was very impressive was a shot of Jageet in front of a car with the floodlights shining on him – it sounds weird but the shot was pretty good. Also, we got some good low angle shots as well and we also improvised quite a lot as well. Overall, we were filming for about 2-3hours and ended up with a lot of shots – can’t wait to get in the editing suite!

Test Screening Feedback

Media Language (A-E)

Average grade was C

Conventions (A-E)

Average grade was C

Creativity (A-E)

Average grade was D

Attention to Detail (A-E)

Average grade D-

Technical Proficiency (A-E)

Average… No comment

Positive Comments:

Cinematography – A lot people said we had a good use of camera angles e.g scenery of the high angles and buildings.

Mise en scene – People said that our locations were good because they allowed the audience to identify the urbanized area. For example the train station shot.

Lighting – It was ok… a lot of natural lighting was used to give an authentic atmosphere and it gave a realistic urban feel to the trailer.

Sound – No sound was used only natural sound.

Positive comment 5 – the audience can really identify and feel the urban youth area. It fit the conventions of our genre. It gave a very good art house theme just like ‘Bullet Boy’ did.

Criticism:

Cinematography – many people said that we must use a tripod to shoot steady shots, as you cannot put handheld shots in a film trailer, as it doesn’t suit the conventions.

Mise en scene – Gain more shots of the characters themselves, as it just looks like a tourist video, going on holiday.

Lighting – The scenes use too much natural lighting, and also it is too dark.

Sound – Start using, various soundtracks for example non-diegetic, parallel and maybe use and ironic soundtrack to give a stronger affect.

Criticism 5 – Use a natural environment to target our audience.

What else would you like to see in this production?

People would like to see more of an art-house theme. Also they want to see a montage sequence of the character(s).

What would you like to see for the postproduction editing?

A dominant voice over sound should be used to give an authentic feel and to contrast with the trailer conventions. Some fast editing for a montage sequence.

Blog comments

What do you think of our blog?

1. What do you particularly like about it? What's especially impressive?
What could be improved? What's missing or could be added?

2. Based on what you've read on the blog (and maybe seen in test screenings in class) what suggestions do you have regarding what we could do to make our Practical Production really successful?

What other things could we include in the production?
How should we go about filming any remaining scenes or editing the footage during post-production (+ suggestions for music, etc.)?

Progress report for Tuesday

We got a lot of filming done on Saturday and got a lot of the shots that we wanted, I think that some of the shot are very good and were planned carefully, but then again some shots were rushed. We hope to get some good feed back, and do some more filming this week.

Progress To Be Made On Thursday lesson Time >RaJ.E$<

We are willing to hopefully get some shots for the beggining of the trailer. we'll record various shots so we have enough for when we edit.
We will be using weekends and holidays to gather extra information, we should be using our lesson time wisely, also we have teachers around to help us. the disadvantage is that shooting in school, teachers may not feel comfortable to include them. Hopefully we will be able to shoot of the school premesis which will be excellent.
Thank you Mr Bush for letting us use lesson time.

Hustle And Flow Trailer Analysis

Trailer Analysis:

I chose this trailer due to the story of the film. This filmed is based on a pimp who has a idol of a rapper, and wants to big out their jut like his idol. He begings to get into rapping and the music by rapping and making his beats with his old school mates and his hoes.
This film relates to our film trailer, as they both include someone who wants to get into the music business.

The shots this film uses are cuts and fades. Cuts are maily used which is a convention of film trailers. The use of light is low-key lighting, this is used to make the film seem a tragic.
The target audince of this film would be from 15-20 and gender and ethnic group. this film may aim more at males as the film contains women as sexual objects.
This audince could be people who like 'Ludacris' as he is in th film starring the idol of the main character.

The film uses non-diegetic sounds, a soundbridge and parrallel sound. the parrallel sound used is atually music made, based in the film. the trailer is amazing and very effective, as they show women as sexual objective, which men want but the pimp wants to be well known in the music industry and not known as a pimp.

Final Beat Storyline By Raj.E$

My name is Raj, i am working in a group with Sundeep and Juggy. We've decided to make a practical production trailer on a basis of music.
The trailer we've decided to do is product, which will give elements of the storyline in order to entice the audience into going to watch the film.
the story is about a teenage boy who enters the music business by using his writing skills and other talents. In order to fund this before he is sucessful, he gets involved in gun crime and drug dealing in order to fund his music career. During the time of his involvement, he builds up a debt to a duglord and gun dealer.
Although he has earn't money though his music, it wasn't enough to pay off the debt and as a result, someones death occurs... this is the 'Final Beat' that says its last word...

Filming on Thurday

On Thursday we should get most of the opening scenes of our trailer done. All the shots that we can shoot will be out side, and perhaps a few in school as well. The rest will have to be shot during the weekends where we have more time and better locations to do shooting.

Aims for this week

This week should start the filming for our film trailer, and hopefully get some good footage. However, I don’t feel that our storyboard truly reflects the ideas that we have, and we will probably improvise some shots whilst filming- we will have more ideas about shots when we get down to filming.

Menace 2 Soicety Trailer

Sundeep Kahlon

Menace 2 society trailer analysis

Menace II Society trailer analysis

The trailer begins with slow and sinister music, which is non-diegetic to the shots that are being shown to the audience. It shows a teacher talking to the student about his life, and this dialogue or conversation is heard over the fast montage sequence that the trailer changes to. There seems to be cuts between the student’s life and a car drawing closer and closer to the screen, however, the meaning of the car is left ambiguous to the audience and acts like an enigma- what will happen? is raised in the audiences mind. The background music seems to be building up to a climax, and the sinister music stops when the dialogue; “All I’m saying is… survive” is heard by the audience. Then suddenly, the audience can see a gang shooting their guns out the car, the gun shots seem to separate this montage sequence with the next that is shown to the audience. Perhaps this indicates to the audience that the genre is more of a gangster movie, because of the fast paced montage sequence and the violent gun shooting.

A young male protagonist is used to create an effective identification with the main character and the audience. Particularly with young males, from black backgrounds and the problems may reflect the problems that the audience may encounter. What’s more, the trailer may fulfil a more diversion gratification for the audience, and allow for a personal identification.

Also, the 1st montage sequence seems to a short summary of his life, as it shows shots of him as a child, and perhaps could be memories and could be linked with the car drawing closer- the anti narrative, flashback shots show that the his life maybe flashing by his eyes, and that the car is the cause of this.

The trailer continues with another montage sequence, with more emotional background music, which is used in a sound bridge. The emotional music could suggest to the audience that this movie contains lose, sorrow, and sadness. However, the music is also contrapuntal to the violent gun shooting, and police arrests that are happening. This makes the scenes or shots in the trailer all the more effective.

Black males in this trailer are represented or seen to be part of gangs, and associated with violence, perhaps this gives a more negative representation of black people and gangs. However, this representation could be showing the audience the harsh reality in living on the streets in America, the streets are dangerous and makes the message of the trailer and movie more effective. Also, in the trailer there are numerous shots of the main hero or protagonist on a struggle to survive, almost, and the lament atmosphere makes the audience relate and identify with the main character, perhaps more of the main target audience (teenagers, more of a black origin) could relate to the heroes struggle in life.

There are also many shots of the main character with his friends, and family, and even a girl –who seems to take the part of the strong girl friend that helps the hero over come the problems in his life. They may be the reason why he continues to fight for his life, and shows a strong sense of unity with family, which again seems to be s major theme in this trailer.

In conclusion, the “Menace to Society” really captures the struggles in life that many people face, gang violence, family issues, etc. It allows the audience to relate to the characters, even through the trailer, showing that the movie it self will be a roller coaster of emotions. The fast montage sequences, combined with the contrapuntal background music create an effective trailer which both grabs the audiences attentions and highlights some of the mina themes.

Progress Report Raj.Es (1)

We have completed our story board and we are willing to get a camera so we can start shooting. Our story board will help us on what shots to take. We may make changes to our story board whilst shooting as we may come across more ideas. Next week we hope to start shooting and gather atleast 30% of the shots we need.

What is Final Beat?

The art of my practical production is going to be in the form of a film trailer, which will be managed and directed by the three members of my group, Me myself Jagjeet, Sundeep and Dilraj. The original idea behind this trailer format was that of a short film, which we initially planned to produce. However we soon realised that turning such a film into a trailer would emphasise its message. Moreover we are currently studying trailers; therefore this would be a great opportunity to learn how to develop such format as well as putting our learning into practice. The title of this particular production has been decided as ‘Final Beat’. The title itself conveys a multiple message that can be interpreted as a heart beat or/and a music beat, which can also be linked to the genre of the trailer. It can take on a form of a musical with a tragic ending, as it can be connoted as the ‘final beat’ of a heart. It is a challenging title that leaves the audience thinking.

an outline of the trailer is as follows: its based on how a young teen makes it to the top in the music industry. how he faces difficulties and obstacles which prevent him going to the top however he over comes them, towards the end but with a sacrifice of someone he dearly loved, his best friend. he starts of getting involved with drugs and guns, but just as he finishes he is targeted as a victim however his friend ends up taking a bullet for him.
not only does it deal with music and crime but also friendship n loyalty. its based in an urban society and environment, which will give it the rough edge effect.

The trailer will represent stereotypical values, which are normally portrayed, however it will also represent reality, which will therefore challenge the audience. Instead of portraying urban youth as this hardcore ongoing battle against society, it will show an example of someone who wants to make it to the top, make something out of himself, however stereotypically will get involved with gun crime. The reason for this is that people expect it to be shown stereotypically. Some will agree, some will not, therefore for that reason we have included stereotypes as well as a moralistic message...

FOURBROTHERS trailer

sundeep kahlon

FOURBROTHER trailer anaysis

FourBrothers trailer analysis.

The beginning of the trailer starts with a montage sequence, with slow and non-diegetic music in the background, whilst a sound bridge method is used to link the moving shots to the next. This creates an even flow between shots, and there is little disruption. Also, in this sequence there is an authoritive narrator, to create a control over the trailer and give it meaning. A quote appears on the screen – “What makes a Brother?” whilst the narrator asks the audience this question. By doing this at the start, shows the audience some of the main themes of the trailer; brotherhood, and also directly involves the audience them selves, by provoking thoughts in their minds and creating enigmas. This is linked to Barthe’s enigma theory, where enigmas are used to engage the audience at the start, to create an effective sequence, this is being used here to engage the passive audience, and catch their attention by provoking thought. These ideas are further reinforced by more text on the screen – “It’s more than the colour of your skin”, and “It’s the people you call family”, which again supports the main theme and ideologies of the movie- family and brother hood.

Also, it is very clever how the trailer is used to introduce the characters shown, and how it creates the sense that the four brothers are all different from each other. For example, when the Four brothers are around the table saying grace, they hold hands from different places at the table, to show unity, as well as diversity and difference. Although the four brothers are different – they are still bound by brotherhood. However, as the audience are being slowly introduced to the characters, and are making identifications and relations with the characters; the equilibrium, as shown in Todorov’s theory, is disrupted when the slow music is over powered by the more sinister music, to reflect the devious atmosphere, and the fear in the mother of the four brothers. The audience is confronted with 2 killers, who seem to have killed their mother, but the audience do not directly witness this. Rather the scene is cut to a long shot out side of the shop where their mother is, and the audience can hear a defying bullet shot, sealing her fate? However, the audience is forced to tackle the enigma, is she really dead? This enigma again engages the audience to think out side the box.

As the trailer progresses, the audiences learns that the mother of the 4 brothers had died. The next scenes is again another piece of text that the narrator reads – “Because some bonds are stronger than blood”, also the fact that that the most significant words are in bold and red colour really emphasises the points and themes that are being made, more importantly the ideologies are more emphasised. Also, when this text appears on the screen, the audience can see a high angle shot of the funeral, and the Blood links with the dismal and lugubrious mood of the funeral.

The pace of the trailer of the trailer seems to speed up, with the fast editing, and fast background music/ or soundtrack suggest that this movie is a thriller and gangster, and also is used to reflect the mood of the montage sequence. Also, in a lot of the sequences, the dialogue is used as more over a voice over, and carries onto the next shot, allowing for the fast paced action to remain on screen with out little interruption, and also the story of the four Brothers is slowly being unravelled.

The characters or rather Four brothers are also represented as being strong, and liberating, and the fact that they are both Black and white races shows that Brotherhood does not depend on colour, race, etc- rather it’s the relationship that matters. It could also send out the ideology that no matter what race or ethnicity any one is, we are all brothers and sisters, and that brotherhood is something that cannot be broken. This trailer also breaks many stereotypes of having white and black brothers, and challenges the view that we are all different; Zeitgeist – this movie represents the spirit of our modern society, and the fact that every one is equal.

Also, most of the action is shown towards the end of the trailer, perhaps this is done to have a greater impact on the audience and also to grab the audiences attention towards the end, as enigmas and questions are raised – this further creates suspense and leaves the audience at a cliff hanger. This idea is supported by the fact that the villain maybe shown towards the end where of the trailer and is used to create suspense as the audience is shown very little of him. This is linked with Propp's theory; the heroes are the Brother showing unity, and the villain who seems to be leading a gang of mercenaries. The villain is shown to e superior and powerful, and the audience see him through a low angle shot, showing that he poses power and dominance. The villain is also shown when the dialogue “Keep knocking on the Devils door long enough…somebody is going to answer you”, and the villain is suggested to be the Devil.

In conclusion, this analysis shows that "FOURBROTHERS" is a post-modern piece of text, or rather movie that strays on the themes of brother hood, through the definitive and dominating narrator, to the text on the screen, the audience shown that this film offers something different to most movies.
